The son of Abraham and Rachel (Hertzog), Christian came to St. Louis in June of 1811, and commenced business in July of the same year at Mrs. Labbadie's old store, opposite Mr. Gratiot's.

Historical sources indicate his house was the third brick home built in St. Louis, at the southeast corner of Main and Locust, where he also conducted his business until his death.

Christian Wilt was a prominent merchant in St. Louis. He operated a large mill and distillery on the Cahokia creek opposite St. Louis, and was a director in the Bank of St. Louis.

He was married at St. Louis on 10 Jan 1815, to Miss Ann K., daughter of Major George Wilson and were the parents of one son, George, who died in 1823 at the age of seven years.
