Ira F.Mansfield was a schoolmate and friend of William McKinley in Poland, Ohio.He enlisted in Company H of the 105th Ohio Volunteer Infantry in August 1862. He was promoted to second lieutenant after the battle of Perryville, Ky. He was later promoted to captain and saw action at Lookout Mountain, Chickamauga, and Missionary Ridge and he participated in Sherman's march. After the war he owned orchards and later coal mines near Beaver, Pa.He served in the Pa. legislature for 10 years. His ancestors were from Wallingford, Connecticut.
