Surgeon at the Royal London Hospital for a great many years from 1871. Famed for his care of Joseph Merrick, aka John Merrick (The Elephant Man) and King Edward VII, on whom he performed a risky, but ultimately life saving appendectomy for which he was later knighted. As a cruel irony and twist of fate, one of his own daughters died later of a perforated appendix. His ashes are buried at Dorchester Cemetery. Thomas Hardy was among the hundreds who attended his funeral.
