Howard was the son of George Michael Layton and Ella Agnes Cline Layton. He served in the 707th Tank Battalion, Company C during WWII as a tank driver. He was survived by his wife Dorothy M. Howdershelt Layton of Preston County, WV and sons David and Terry.
