Son of Lot and Martha Northcutt-Doty. Husband of Emma Algire, whose family name was also the name of a town in Washington County, Missouri where they were married. James was the son of a Union soldier, Lot Doty, who saw action in the "Battle of Vicksburg". His mother, Martha, had moved with her sons and grandsons (Larkin and Lytle Asplin) to Arkansas from Missouri 20 years after her husband died, and she was buried at Big Flat, Arkansas. Her sons, including James, then moved to the Newport area after her death. The grandsons, Larkin and Lytle, met and married their wives Ethel and Minnie at Advance, Arkansas and moved back to Missouri.
