Quite a gloom was cast over this district last week when the sad news arrived that Private John Cornish Lawrey had passed away at the Greenvale Sanatorium on Thursday, 3rd August. Deceased, who was one of the first to enlist, was the eIdet son of Mr and Mrs John Lawrey, of the "Uplands," Kinglake, and prior to enlisting followed the occupation of nurseryman with his father and brothers at Kinglake. He was invalided home from Egypt with a bad cold, which terminated fatally. The funeral arrangements, which were in the hands of Mr H. Lewis, were carried out on Saturday, at Whittlesea. Deceased was accorded a military funeral, but owing to some mistake the firing party failed to put in an appearance. The coffin, wrapped in the Union Jack, travelled from Melbourne by hearse, arriving in Whittlessa about a quarter to 4 o'clock.
A large crowd from Kinglake and surrounding districts was present. The body was borne to its last resting place by four uncles of deceased, viz., Messrs Peter, James, Christopher, and Richard Lawrey, the pall bearers being Messrs Edward and Richard Power, Park Lynch, T. Mason, and T. Pearson. The pall was the Union Jack. The Rev. Selwyn Chase, Church of England, officiated at the grave. Much sympathy is expressed for the bereaved family.
