Margaret married Marion L. Bailey on November 13, 1871 in Camden County. They had three children – Ida L., David Elmer, and Charles, between 1874 and 1881. Very little is known about their family life, not believed to be happy. Ida married William B. Evans and had a son, Hubert Evans, but the marriage was short-lived and her son grew up in his father's household. Ida Bailey Evans moved to California and married again to Frank Doyle but had no more children. Margaret's son, David Elmer, met a tragic end after his young wife died and he was shot to death by a farmer whose teen-aged daughter he was wooing against her father's will. Charles, called Charley, briefly went to Texas as a teenager to farm with his uncle, James Monroe Brown, but the partnership did not last and it is not known what happened to Charley after 1897.
In the 1920 census Margaret Bailey was living in Lebanon, Missouri, recorded as "widowed" but possibly actually divorced. At some point after that she moved to California to live near her daughter, Ida, who saw after her until she died in Los Angeles in 1937. She also had a sister, Sarah Brown Gire, who lived in the Los Angeles area. Margaret's burial site is not known.
