Son of James Ellam and Nanny Drake, husband of Nancy Brook and father of Samuel, John, Hannah, Sarah Ann, William, Thomas, James and Joshua Ellam.

In 1851, William, 51, was shown living at 590 Storths, Dalton, Almondbury, Huddersfield, Yorkshire, England, and he was shown employed as a Woollen Cloth Finisher. Living with him were wife, Nancy, 47, and children, William Ellam, 15, Thomas Ellam, 13, James Ellam, 10, Joshua Ellam, 7, and David Hawksworth, a sailmaker, age 24, Hannah (Ellam) Hawksworth, aged 21, and their son William D. Hawksworth, aged 2.
