Martha Ellen Lewis, only child of Dr. Lawrence Lewis and his 1st wife Mary Ferguson, b. Feb. 8, 1844 at St. Clair County, MO. Through her father, Mary Ellen was the great granddau. of Col. Fielding Lewis and Betty Washington, latter the eldest natural sibling of Gen. George Washington, first President of the United States.

Mary Ellen d. of cirrhosis of the liver, May 13, 1901 at Seattle, Washington [re: Washington State Archives, Register of Deaths in King County, record No. 6432]. Where she is interred is currently unknown to the memorialist.

On Aug. 6, 1869 at St. Clair County, MO, Martha Ellen m. Henry Waite Douglass, s. of Col. George S. Douglass and Elizabeth Selden, b. June 19, 1839 at Bates County, MO:

• Douglas, Henry W. to Martha Ellen Lewis - 6 August 1869. - This is to certify that on the 6th of August Eighteen Hundred sixty nine AD. Henry W. Douglas & Miss Martha Ellen Lewis were by me united in the sacred Bond of matrimony. - John W. Gilbreath, An Ordained Minister. - Filed Aug. 30th 1869. Wm. D. Graham, Clerk Recorder.

Martha Ellen Lewis and Henry Waite Douglass had four recognized children, who will be outlined in their father's memorial. Unfortunately, the three eldest children either died in infancy or before the age of 10. The fourth and youngest child died at age 40 having never married leaving no issue.
