He arrived in Kentucky, from Virginia, in his early adult years. He was a teacher and took his first teaching job at Hodgenville, in LaRue County. When he removed to Elizabethtown, in about 1834, he took charge of the Hardin Academy and remained so until his death. During that period he turned out more good students than any teacher before him. According to the custom of the day, he used the rod liberally. He married a daughter of Reverend Lewis Chastain, a Methodist minister, who came from Virginia. He and his wife had several sons:

- Lafayette, who fought for the Confederacy, and after the war returned to Elizabethtown where he took the positon of principal of Elizabethtown Female Academy

- Virgil, who also fought for the Confederacy and participated in numerous battles including Murfreesboro, Jackson, Chickamauga, and Resaca. He was wounded twice. Upon return to home, he served as the elected county clerk of Hardin County.

- Fox, He served with the Confederancy in the fortifications around Richmond. He served as assistant county clerk.
