Irene Victoria Hendershot, 73, of 33762 State Route 537 Rinard Mills, Ohio died at 4:50 p.m. Tuesday, December 9, 1986, in the Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital, Parkersburg, West Virginia following an extended illness. She was born near Sycamore Valley, Ohio on June 30, 1913, a daughter of the late Forrest and Myrtle Morrison English.
She was a member of the Creighton Ridge Church of Christ near Sycamore Valley. Mrs. Hendershot was a retired school teacher, retiring in 1972 from Skyvue High School near Graysville. She had retired after 32 years teaching in Washington, Noble, and Monroe County schools.
She was named Ohio Woman of the Year for 1986 by the state auxiliary of Ohio Rural Mail Carriers Association and was a former state auxiliary president. She was presently serving as secretary of the Washington County Auxiliary of the Ohio Rural Mail Carriers Association. Mrs. Hendershot was a member of the Ohio Chapter of Retired Teachers Association and the National Chapter of Retired Teachers Association. She was also a former member of the Bethel Homemakers Club and the Sense & Nonsense Book Club.
On June 23, 1949, she married Clyde M. Hendershot who survives of the home. One daughter survives: Mrs. Dan (Janie) Dodge of Route 1, Sardis, Ohio, One son survives: Thomas D. Hendershot of Campobello Island, New Brunswick, Canada. One brother survives: F. S. English, Jr. of Indianapolis, Indiana. Also surviving are: four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Evangelist Harold W. Bankes, in 1945; two sisters, Kathleen Morrison and Pauline Smith; and one brother Harold English.
Friends were received at the Watters Funeral Home, Woodsfield from 7-9 p.m. Thursday, December 11, 1986, and all day on Friday, December 12, 1986. Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Saturday, December 13, 1986, in the Watters Funeral Home, Woodsfield with Minister James Gallagher officiating. Burial followed in the Creighton Ridge Cemetery near Sycamore Valley.
