Civil War veteran. Served as a private in Company B, 39th P.V.M. from July 1, 1863 to Aug 2, 1863.

His son Preston was tried for murdering Charles. It was alleged that Preston had quarreled with his father and struck him with a coal bucket causing a gash on his head that became infected and led to his death two weeks later. A jury found Preston not guilty.
