ROBERT A. AUDRAIN WAS ONE OF GRAND RAPIDS' EARLY CONTRACTORS.
ROBERT A. AUDRAIN, 77 years old, one of the pioneer contractors and builders of Grand Rapids, died at 3 o'clock yesterday afternoon at the Reed's Lake sanitarium. He had been in failing health all summer. Death was the direct result of a blood clot on the brain.
Mr. Audrain was the first white child born in the Indian territory, where his father was stationed as a government commissioner. Here he spend his childhood days, and upon the death of his father succeeded him as commissioner. He held this position for several years. Two years before the close of the Civil war he came to Grand Rapids, was married here and shortly afterward became the proprietor of a grocery store and meat market in the locality of what is now Grandville.
During his advent as a contractor in this city he built several of the landmarks, almost all of which have given way to modern commercial structures. He built the house at 149 Fuller avenue, S.E., in which he had lived for the past 33 years.
Besides a wife, he is survived by two sons, EDWARD R. AUDRAIN of the Greulich company and LOUIS G. AUDRAIN, manager of Morris & Co.'s local branch, and three daughters, MRS. F. VANDERSTOLP of this city and MRS. H.B. HANSEN of Charlevoix, and MRS. CHARLES SKUSA of Terre Haute, Ind.
Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock Thursday afternoon at the residence. Interment will be in Martin cemetery.
