He was the son of William and Susannah (Garland) Burgess. Edward married Nancy Anne Francis Dec. 24th 1766 in Saint Annes Parish, Goochland, Giles Co., Virginia. He served in the American Revoluntionary War as a PVT in the 14th VA Regiment.
