He was born Thomas Robeson Pelter, but preferred to go by Robert T. "Bob" Pelter.

According to his niece Kathy Henderson, who was a piano teacher, Bob "was a fine jazz pianist and was a musician for much of his life. In 1930 he was playing on the radio in Norfolk, NE with the Printer's Devil Orchestra. He was married for about three years to Carol Elizabeth Greene. No children. "
