John Poland Jr. is the son of William Poland Sr. and Mary Polly (Swadley) Poland. On 12 Nov 1835 he married Anna Symmonds in Marion County, Indiana. The family moved to western Illinois settling first in Adams County near Marceline around 1843 or 1844, then later in Hancock County about 1855. He was one of the earliest settlers in the area, owning a large piece of land in the western part of Prairie Township. They were the parents of at least three children, Margaret, William John, and an infant son who died in the spring of 1849. They took into their home Frances Elmer "Frank" Nash, whom they treated as a son, and also raised a nephew, J. Wilson Boles, son of Llewellen M. and Sarah Jane (Symmonds) Boles.

Primitive Messenger, p. 816 (publication of Primitive Baptist Church)
JOHN POLAND
Our beloved and highly esteemed brother John Poland, was a member of our church, and a deacon. He was sound in the faith, had no compromise to make with error, and contended earnestly for the faith once delivered to the saints. He was born in Ohio, but moved to Indiana and thence to Illinois. He became a member of the Old School Baptist church called Bethel, in Hancock county, Ills., in April, 1853. He was in his seventy-fifth year. He came to my house the first day of October, 1886, to go with me to meeting the next day; and went to bed as well as common, and in good spirits. The next morning he was dead in bed. He will awake in the likeness of Jesus when he comes the second time without sin unto salvation. The unworthy writer tried to preach to a very large concourse of people. B. R. Warren. Note: Elder Bushrod R. Warren, author of this obituary, was the husband of his sister-in-law Delilah Symmonds.
