Mary was the daughter of Professor S. V. Burks and wife, Alice who had moved to Poteet in 1922 from Mississippi. Her father was the Superintendent of Poteet Schools from 1922-1937. Mary lived a short life, having succumbed to the effects of Polio at age 8.
