George Truman Simpson, 61, a native San Diegan, retired Navy commander and city employee for 29 years, died Thursday in Mercy Hospital.
He retired in June 1988 as director of transportation. He also had served as director of community development and assistant director of engineering and development. He had worked on numerous projects, including renovation of City College, Horton Plaza, Market Street development, the Model Cities Program, Linda Vista development and Housing and Urban Renewal grants.
His last project was the San Diego River Improvement Program, on which work is under way in Mission Valley.
He recently had opened his own consulting business, Infrastructure and Finance.
He was a graduate of Grossmont High School and San Diego State University, where he affiliated with Kappa Sigma fraternity. He earned his master's degree at UCLA.
He joined the Navy and attended Officers Candidate School in Newport, R.I., earning his ensign rating in 1953. He served as an engineering officer on an aircraft carrier during the Korean conflict. After the Korean War, he joined the city staff in 1959.
He remained in the Naval Reserve until 1988, when he retired as a commander.
He was active in various community projects and organizations and was a member of the board of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Mary Elaine; three children, Craig of New Hampshire, Caroline of Dusseldorf, West Germany, and Kathleen of La Mesa; and his father, William H. Simpson of Lakeside. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday in the First United Methodist Church of Mission Valley. Cremation was planned.

Memorial services for retired Navy Cmdr. George T. Simpson, 61, of La Mesa, will be at 1 p.m. tomorrow in First United Methodist Church in Mission Valley. Cremation was planned by the Telophase Society, with burial of ashes to be in Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery. He died Thursday in a hospital.
Cmdr. Simpson was a lifelong county resident and a retired city of San Diego employee. He had served as city director of transportation and community development, and last served as assistant director of engineering and development.
After his retirement last year, he began a consulting engineering business known as Infrastructure Planning and Finance.
While working for the city, he was involved with the redevelopment of San Diego City College, Horton Plaza, Market Street, the Linda Vista area and the San Diego River Improvement Program.
Cmdr. Simpson was a veteran of the Korean War and a graduate of Grossmont High School, San Diego State University and the Officers Candidate School. He earned his master's degree in public health at UCLA.
Survivors include his wife, Mary E.; a son, Craig of New Hampshire; two daughters, Caroline Simpson of West Germany and Kathleen Simpson of La Mesa; and his father, William H. of Lakeside. The family suggested donations to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation or the American Cancer Society.
