Gurine Thorsdatter Tofte Married Gilbert Brakken in Minnesota. Her father and 2 sisters were also in Douglas County, Minnesota. Her father was Thore Iversen Tofte, and a sister was Karen (Mrs. Peder) Boesen of Belle River Township, Douglas County. Mrs. Gurine Grulke, a resident of Douglas county for the past thirty-nine years, was called to her eternal rest last Wednesday morning, Aug. 22, at 4 a.m. at her home in Alexandria, after an illness of only four and a half days, of apoplexy.
Mrs. Grulke, whose maiden name was Gurine Tofte, was born in Ringebo, Gulbransdalen, Norway, on April 30, 1863, and was therefore 65 years, 3 months and 22 days at the time of her death. She received her education in Norway and in 1887 she came to America, coming direct to Minneapolis, where she worked two years. Then coming to Alexandria July 2, 1891. She was united in marriage to Gilbert Brakken, who preceeded her in death. To this union three sons were born.
On April 23, 1903 she was united in marriage to Albert G. Grulke, one son being born to this union. Surviving her are her husband and four sons, Samuel T. Brakken on the home farm in Ida township, Anton Brakken, also of Ida; Archibald Brakken of this city, and Albert T. Grulke of Carlos township, all of whom were present at the time of her death. She also leaves on brother, Engebret Tofte of Williston, N. Dak., and one sister, Mrs. Mary Holan of Landa, N. Dak. There are also six grandchildren.
Mrs. Grulke spent most of her life on the farm in Ida township, residing there about thirty years, coming from there to Alexandria in January 1922, which has since been her home. Mrs. Grulke was for years an active member of the First Norwegian Lutheran church and Ladies Aid society up until the last few years when she was unable to full fill her duties.
Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the home and at 2:30 from the First English Lutheran church, Rev. C. E. Hanson officiating. Burial was made in the Lake Ida cemetery. The pallbearers were: John, Miller, Ole Peterson, John Toft, Amund Huset, August Swenson and Charlie Christopherson.
