Bobbie Abernathy was born in Fort Worth. He graduated from Polytechnic High School and earned his bachelor's degree in architecture from Texas Tech College and a master's degree in city and regional planning from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
He joined the New Orleans City Planning Commission from Cincinnati in 1966. He retired after 30 years as principal city planner. He was fondly regarded as the "Renaissance Man" of the City Planning Commission.
He was the son of the late Stafford and Jessie Lee Abernathy.
Survivors: Wife, Carol Ann Pattison Abernathy of New Orleans; sons, Jon Kevin Abernathy and Trevor Scott Abernathy, both of New Orleans; and brother, Bill Abernathy of Fort Worth.
