Merle served in the United States Navy during World War II and the Korean War. He served in the Pacific Theatre in both wars.
He was employed as a machinist at Ridge Tool in Elyria for eight years before retiring in 1980. Merle was previously employed at Thew Shovel in Lorain for 28 years.
He ws a member of Henrietta United Methodist Church. Merle was a charter member of the Birmingham Lions Club. As a hobby, Merle worked on small engines and automobiles for family and friends. He loved woodworking, building furniture for family members. Merle loved to travel with his family in his motor home across the USA. His greatest joy ws spending time with his family. They were the center of his universe.
Survivors include his wife of 83 years, Maud Elizabeth Surrarrer (nee Talbot); his daughters, Sharon Surrarrer and her companion, Brian Gese of Spearfish. South Dakota, Gail (Rex) Johns of Wakeman, Linda Holcomb of Lorain, Marcia (Gary) Abercrombie of Cary, North Carolina; 11 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his stillborn son, Robert Lee Surrarrer; his brothers, Mike Surrarrer, Clair Surrarrer, and parents Warren and Cleo (nee Hinckleu) Surrarrer.
Friends may call Monday, August 25, 2008 from 7 to 9 P.M. at the Hempel Funeral Home, 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, August 26, 2008 at 11 A.M. at the funeral home. Amherst Veterans Military Honor Guard will preform honors. The Rev. Ray Ake, Pastor of Henrietta United Methodist Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Brownhelm Cemetery, Vermilion.
