Maria Catharine was baptized at the Blue Mountain Church at Stouchsburg, Berks county, PA. Her godparents were Nicholas Gebbart and his wife. This date was extracted from the church records of the "Blue Mountain Church", copied in August 1916 by Hinke. This was a Reformed Church. Catharine, as she was called, was born at a time when father Peter Hoffman was traveling to and from the Tulpehocken region of Berks county. Peter's travels took him north west into the unsettled regions of Lykens Valley, located then in the frontier lands of Lancaster county..... primarily to escape the indian raids, and to protect his young family. In the records of "Host" Tulpehocken Church, it notes that Catharina, daughter of Peter Hoffman, took communion on Whitsunday, 1767. She is listed as a child of Peter Hoffman and a spouse of Andrew Riegel in the Commemorative Biographical Encyclopedia of Dauphin County, Pa., 1896, by Runk & Company publishers, pg. 117.
