Actress. The daughter of an English engineer, she was brought up in the small town of Newcastle, in the Western suburb of Dublin. Schooled by her own personal governess, she came to the realization of pursuing a profession in acting and moved to London to train at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. Her career initiation was on the stage and it would not be long before she made an impression with her performance in the production of "Shadows and Substance" during the early 1940s, while acquiring extensive experience touring with a number of English troupe companies. During this period, she marked her film debut in "Ghost Story" (1941) and for a large part of the decade, she was a fixture on Broadway in such plays as "King Henry IV, Part II" (1946), "Duet for Two Hands" (1947) and what may perhaps be her most accomplished stage part; her origination of Anne Boleyn opposite Rex Harrison (Henry) in "Anne of the Thousand Days" (1948 to 1949). Her greatest acclaim in films was when she was cast as the servant, Jenny Jones in "Tom Jones" (1963), for which she received an Academy Award nomination. This was followed by her part of Emilia in the Lawrence Olivier adaptation of Shakespeare's "Othello (1965), garnering her a second Oscar nomination. She died from complications of pneumonia.
