Evelyn Hart Steinbach, 95, of McHenry, passed away Tuesday, May 1, 2012, in Woodstock.

She was born June 29, 1916, at home on the family farm in Ringwood, to Jacob F. and Susan (Meier) Justen.

Evie married the love of her youth, Jack J. Hart on June 14, 1941. Tragically, after only seven years, he was killed in a car accident. Though she thought she would never be happy again, she eventually met and married Jerry Steinbach, and they were blessed with 45 years of marriage.

She devoted her life to her family, friends and the church and had been a lifelong member of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church of McHenry.

She had been instrumental in getting the St. Mary's boys basketball team together, and with the help of a coach, the boys were allowed to practice at East Campus High School and participate in a basketball league, playing with both private and public schools. The desire for St. Mary's school to have a gym was the driving force behind Evie's biggest commitment, the St. Mary's Rummage Sale. She was the first chairperson for the sale in 1956 and participated every year after until her health no longer allowed it.

She had been an avid gardener and fruit picker so that she could preserve food to serve to her family all year round. Evie was very athletic, enjoying all outdoor sports, especially horseback riding and golf. She was in high school plays and enjoyed dancing.

Evie was a co-founder of "Bridge for Books," which provided books for the school's library for many years, was an active member of St. Clara's Court No. 659, National Catholic Society of Foresters, the Christian Mothers, served as an election judge for years in McHenry County, and in her golden years, she delivered Meals on Wheels to the McHenry area. She served her church and community out of love and would not have admitted to any of this because she never expected any recognition for her kindness.

Survivors include her three children, John (Melanie) Hart Steinbach, Anne (Harry) Brown and Jim (Pam) Steinbach; her son-in-law, Mike Dwyer; her grandchildren, Scott (Dawn) Steinbach, Lori (John) Diaz, Ann (Darrel) Strickler, Jack (Shawn) Dwyer, Mike (Barb) Dwyer, Joe Dwyer, Jennifer (Jon) Appel, Ericka (Brian) Howard, John Gibson and Zachary (Jen) Gibson; her step-grandchildren, Alison (Dave) Mercure, Bev (Tony) Pennington, Caroline (Bill) Balacek and Debbie (Mike) Palmer; her great-grandchildren, Nadia, Jake, Jared, Lauren, Michael, Alexis, Matthew, Aidan, Bridget, Brendan, Fintan, Daniel and Joshua; her step-great-grandchildren, Tyler, Emily, Amber, Nate, Megan, Eryn, Katy, Melissa, Abby, Brandon and Collin; a great-great-grandchild, Carson; her sister, Alma Anderson; two sisters-in-law, Betty Justen and Pat Wagner; her brother-in-law, Howard (Sharon) Hart; her dear friend, Marilee Rundio; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; both of her husbands; a daughter, Nancy Hart Steinbach Dwyer; a son-in-law, John A. Gibson; her brothers, Alex (Elvera) Justen, Donald Justen and James, who died at birth; her brothers-in-law, Arnold Anderson, Robert Schaefer, Irwin (Ruth) Hart, Edwin (Ruth) Steinbach, John (Veronica) Steinbach and Bill (Mary) Steinbach; and her sisters-in-law, Dotty Hart, Betty (Fred) Smith and Mary (Bob) Higgens.

The visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 8, at Colonial Funeral Home, 591 Ridgeview Drive, McHenry. The funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 9, at St. Mary Catholic Church, 1401 N. Richmond Road, McHenry. Interment will be in St. Mary Cemetery in McHenry.
