Lewis was one of eight children born to John S. Hall and Margaret Briggs, both of Canada. His paternal grandfather was from Ireland. His preliminary education was in Shelburne and Orangeville, Ontario. He entered the University of Toronto, graduating in the class of 1897. Then entering Knox College at Toronto, where he studied Theology. He was confirmed as a minister of the Presbyterian Church in 1899, accepting a position in St. Peter, Minnesota, and later, Elkhart, Indiana. After his health failed he turned his attentions to business. On the 1 March 1913 he came to Denver, Colorado, as General Manager of the Rocky Mountain division of the Occidential Life Insurance Company.
