Another Old Citizen Gone Hence. The Last of Life to Dennis Kellogg.
A BRIEF BIOGRAPHY.
Dennis Kellogg was the son of Azor and Nancy M. Kellogg. He was born May 20th, 1830, in Wayne county, Pennsylvania, and died, after a long illness, last Saturday morning at his residence in the east past of this city at the age of fifty-two years, six months and five days.
He moved with his parents in July, 1840, to McHenry county, Illinois, where the family remained until January, 1851, when they came to Valparaiso, and they have been residences of the city ever since.
He was united in marriage July 14, 1852, in Batavia, New York, to Lucelia M. Norton, who survives him. Their union was blessed by the birth of two sons, the youngest of whom died in 1868. the older son, Del Kellogg, is still living a citizen of Valparaiso.
In July, 1851, Mr. Kellogg with his father and two brothers, John and Alfred, established a partnership in the foundry business under the firm name of Kellogg & Sons, which they continued until within a few years when the father closed his connection with the firm and the business was afterward conducted in the name of Kellogg Brothers. During a few years of their early business career they combined the lumber and furniture business with that of the foundry, being a part of the time associated with Daniel White.
The demands of their foundry increasing, they added a lathe and machine tools and disposed of their interest in the furniture establishment. During these first years the father and sons were located on the lot now occupied by Laporte's meat market and Flagg's show store.
Together these brothers have labored faithfully and harmoniously through thirty years. Quiet and unobtrusive they were, yet always diligent and enterprising, possessing justly the esteem of all who knew them.
They have built up together a good business and secured good homes, and, what is better, won and sustained enviable reputations for integrity.
But the little band is broken. The youngest of the trio has relinquished the implements of labor and departed to that home whence no traveler returns. Those to whom his geneial face was familiar will see him no more on earth. A sad truth, but the fact of death is one we must all realize. Well it will be should we live a lite as good as that of our deceased friend.
What there is of consolation to bereaved hearts in sympathy of friends we extend to the sorrowing relatives.
The funeral services were conducted from the family residence Sunday at 3 p. m., Rev. Robert Beer officiating. The remains were laid to rest in the old cemetery.
