Jonathan's mother, Martha Patty Clark, was born on 15 May 1774 in Framingham, Middlesex Co., Massachusetts; her death information is unknown. Jonathan's father, Demel, enlisted in the army on 15 Feb 1813 as a private in the 25th US Infantry Regiment under Captain Battey. Demelle died on 6 Jul 1813 in Niagara Falls, Niagara Co., New York in the service of his country.

There is obviously a discrepancy in the birth date of Jonathan Theodore Grout when comparing his birth certificate (attached) and his tombstone.

Jonathan Theodore Grout married Mary Louise Chew on 06 Apr 1841 in Greene Co., GA. She was born in Greene Co., GA and was the daughter of John Chew (1775-1841) and Mary (Monfort) Chew (Abt. 1794-Bef. 1840).

The 1850 US Census of District 21, Macon Co., AL enumerated the household of 38 Y/O Jonathan Theodore Grout, a money keeper born in Vermont, and his 33 Y/O wife, Mary Louise (Chew) Grout, born in Georgia. Also living in the household were their children: 8 Y/O Ann Elizabeth Grout (b. Abt. 1842 in GA); 6 Y/O Oscar DeMelle Grout (b. Abt. 1844 in GA); 4 Y/O William Clifford Grout (b. Abt. 1846 in AL) and 2 Y/O Ella Virginia Grout (b. Abt. 1848 in AL), d. 01 Mar 1928 at Mobile, AL, m. John A. McLeod who died July 1917 (Widow Ella applied for his Civil War pension on 11 Jan 1924. Another member of the household was William Chew, the unmarried 25 Y/O brother of Mary Louise (Chew) Grout employed as a merchant. The ages and places of birth of their enumerated children help to determine that the family moved from Greene Co., GA to Macon, Co., AL between 1844-1846.

After several years of pain and suffering, Jonathan T. Grout died on 05 Sep 1857, age 45, at his home in Auburn, AL.

His wife, Mary Louise (Chew) Grout, moved to Atlanta, GA to live with her daughter, Mrs. John A. McLeod (Ella Virginia (Grout) McLeod, and died there on 12 Feb 1901 of the "grip" (influenza) at the age of 85. Her body was transported back to Auburn, AL to be buried with her husband.
