Jefferson Davis Skaggs, owner and operator of the Iberia Electric light plant and mill, which is run in connection, met a sudden and tragic death on Wednesday evening of last week when he was caught in the machinery at the power house.

Mr. Skaggs was accustomed to starting the lights early and returning to his home, nearby, for supper. On Wednesday evening he failed to return for supper. Mrs. Skaggs went to the mill to learn what was delaying him. Failing to find him, she reported the fact and a search was instituted by some of the neighbors. His body, in a mangled condition, was found in the old boiler room of the mill by John Shackleford, he having evidently been dead for some time. An oil can was found near the large drive shaft where he had been oiling the machinery. A large setscrew on the drive shaft had caught the sleeve of his coat and tore most of the clothing from his body. His chest was badly crushed and neck and both legs broken in several places. The body was removed to the Skaggs home and later to the Adams & Casey undertaker parlor where it was prepared for burial.

Funeral services, conducted by Rev. Miles Boden of Hancock, were held at the Iberia Cemetery in the presence of a large concourse of sorrowing friends and relatives. All business firms in town closed their places of business to pay tribute to their departed friend and neighbor.

The deceased was 66 years old, was born in Knoxville, Tenn. and lived in and near Iberia for many years. He was an ideal citizen and a Christian gentleman, being a devoted member of the Advent Christian Church. His pure life lived among us is worthy of emulation.

He is survived by his wife and one son, Bennett Skaggs, who lives in Dixon and owns the ice plant at that place.

Two of his brothers, Gordon and G.P. Skaggs, who preceded him in death, also met sudden and tragic deaths. Gordon was found dead on Lookout Mountain, in Colorado, several years ago after mysteriously leaving his home near Iberia, and Gid was found dead in bed at his home in Maries County Monday morning, August 22, just three days prior to the death of J.D. Skaggs.
