Son of Charles and Maria (Fretenburgh) Clapp.
Brother of Charles, George (1849-1924), William (1853-?), Melville (1855-1857), Aaron (1856-1914), and Carrie (1860-1914).

Parents were Maria Fretenburgh and Charles C. Clapp (1820-1886). John's wife's name was Josephine Thompson (1851-1894 [according to my records[). Children were Edith Clapp (1874-1948), John Edgar Clapp Jr. (1882-?), Flora Eva Clapp (1884-?), and Edgar J. Clapp (1886-?).
