He was state superintendent of education from 1884 to 1888, when he became superintendent for the New Orleans public school system, a position he maintained until his death in 1910. He started the Louisiana Teachers Association, now called the Louisiana Association of Educators. Warren Easton High School, the first public high school in Louisiana, is named in his honor. The school opened three years after Mr. Easton's death. It became a charter school in 2006.

He was married to the former Camille Hart, of whom no Findagrave information is available.
