Mr. Keele was reported in the 1875 Kansas Agricultural Census as being a carpenter.

He was among some of the earliest African American settlers to move to Manhattan.

He married Palmyra Cox on June 10, 1861 in Tennessee. He served about 3 months in the Civil War, after which he remained in Tennessee until moving to Kansas in 1870.

He and Palmyra had adopted Rosa Keele, probably his niece, and she came with them. Her biological family, the Keeles, came to Manhattan in 1880.

Mr. Grigsby was a member of the 2nd M.E. Church.
