Walter was born in and grew up in Douglas County, SD and married Margaret DeHaai in 1936. When the Great Depression hit and there were no jobs in South Dakota, he and his wife headed north to Montana for him to work on the construction of Fort Peck Dam. Their daughter was born in the Glasgow Hospital in 1937 and he was killed on September 22, 1938 in the Fort Peck Dam Slide, along with seven other men. His body is forever entombed in the dam. A headstone was erected in 2005 to mark the grave site of these men.
