Staff Sgt. Thomas K. Fogarty, 30, of Alameda, Calif., died May 6, in Ahmad-Kheyl, Afghanistan, from injuries sustained when enemy forces attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device. He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion (Airborne), 509th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 25th Infantry Division, Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska. Born at Alameda Hospital on January 27, 1982, Tommy is survived by his heartbroken parents Thomas Fogarty and Stephanie and Michael Fisher. Thomas fell in action in Ahmad Kheyl, Afghanistan on May 6, 2012 during his third combat tour, while serving with Company C, 3rd Battalion, 509th Infantry Regiment (Airborne) in Paktia Province. Thomas was the beloved husband of Vanessa Fogarty and the loving father of Kellan and Caden; the brother of Rory Fogarty; the grandson of David Howe and Linda Lee; the nephew of John Fogarty, George and Debra Fogarty, and Tim and Kim Fogarty, and of Melanie and Matt Lyons, Michelle and James Homen, Peggy and Tom Howe, Geoff Howe, and Tamara and John Hernandez; the son-in-law of Mona and Jim Blewer and brother-in-law of Adam Ramos. He was also very close to his cousins: Nick, Summer, Jenna, Holly, Emily, Asia, Hannah, Christopher, Jonathan, Caitlin and Colin.
Thomas graduated from high school in Alameda, joining the Army in January, 2004. He served two combat tours in Iraq before being deployed to Afghanistan last month. Entering the service as a private, Tommy excelled in his chosen career, rapidly rising to the rank of Staff Sergeant. He was a courageous and dedicated soldier, a source of great pride to his parents, a loving husband and devoted father, a loyal brother, a cherished friend, and a lover of life who enjoyed snowboarding, mountain biking and fast cars and motorcycles.
While Thomas will always live in our hearts, his departure has left an emptiness that can never be filled in this life.
Family and friends can visit with Tommy at St. Albert the Great Church on Bay Farm Island on Sunday, May 20 from 2 pm until 8 pm with a vigil service at 6 pm. The funeral service will be held on Monday, May 21 at 11 am at Kofman Auditorium in Alameda High School, followed by a reception for family and friends. Thomas will be interred at Arlington National Cemetery.
A memorial account has been established with Wells Fargo Bank for SSG Thomas Fogarty on behalf of his children, Kellan (5) and Caden (3). Donations in Thomas's memory may also be made to The Fisher House Foundation, Inc., In Memory of SSG Thomas K. Fogarty, 111 Rockville Pike, Suite 420, Rockville, MD 20850-5168, which assists the families of the fallen.
While devastated by our loss, we are proud of what Thomas achieved and will always honor his choice to serve.
