Martha Jane was the youngest child of Jesse and Patsy (Murphy) Reeves. She married William Franklin Edwards on 5 February 1850 in Pike County.
She was the mother of ten children, nine sons and one daughter. Her son Charles Harvey Edwards went to Texas and, according to a descendant, died of pneumonia in 1907 during a visit to Troy. There were three sons who did not live to adulthood: William (b. 1861) and twin boys (b. 1869) who were not named on the 1870 census.
