She was born to Leotha O. and Gemeral E. Berry, Sr. Mrs. Hawkins graduated from George W. Brackenridge High School, San Antonio. She received an Associates Degree at San Antonio College, later attending Trinity University of San Antonio and El Centro College in Dallas, Texas. She was stricken with polio at age 12 and underwent surgery for breast cancer at age 39. Fully recovered, she moved to Dallas. Ten years later she was afflicted with bone cancer and returned to San Antonio to live with her daughter, and son in-law. Eventually she moved to Indianapolis to be with her sister who had lost her husband to cancer. They didn't let her health problems deter them from traveling to Africa, Europe and taking cruises during their time together.
