James Pierce Campbell, aged 73, a retired merchant of Creston, died Sunday evening at his home following a three-year illness.

Born in Creston, he was a son of the late Hiram Campbell, former State Senator, and Mary Jane Maze Campbell. He was a member of the Creston Methodist Church and a life-long resident of Creston.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Julia Campbell; four daughters, Mrs. C.S. Depue, Palestine, Mrs. Auldine Merrill, Mrs. Richard Martin and Mrs. Wanda Miller, all of Parkersburg; two sons, Warren Campbell, Belpre, O., and Gray Campbell, Gilbert, W.Va.; one step-son, Staff Sgt. Floyd B. Smith, serving in England; two step-daughters, Mrs. John W. McPeek and Mrs. Harry D. Bingman, both of Parkersburg; one brother, Thomas Campbell, Creston; two sisters, Mrs. Alza Huffman, Parkersburg, and Mrs. Ella Baker, Creston; and eight grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mrs. Arizona Arthur Campbell; two sons, Hallie Campbell and James Pierce Campbell, Jr.; one step-daughter, Mrs. Frank Culp; one brother, Allen Campbell; and two sisters, Mrs. Fanny Rogers and Mrs. Emeline Stump.

Funeral services were conducted from the Creston Methodist Church Thursday afternoon with the Rev. Herbert Spencer of Vienna officiating. Burial was in the Creston cemetery. The Spencer Funeral Home of Belpre, Ohio, was in charge of arrangements.
