Aged Pioneer Citizen Is Claimed By Death

W. H. Rice Died Saturday-Burial Sunday Afternoon-Came to Pauls Valley in 1903

Funeral services for William Houston Rice were held from the family residence, 108 North Earl street, Sunday afternoon at 4 o'clock, conducted by Rev. P. D. Tucker, pastor of the Presbyterian church.

Mr. Rice was born at Arkadelphia Alabama, on December 11,1848, and died at his home here, Saturday afternoon, July 19, at 5:30 o'clock, aged 81 years, 7 months and 8 days. He had been a resident of Pauls Valley since 1903, and for the past year had been in very frail health, his condition being serious several weeks before his death.

Mr. Rice owned and operated the Globe hotel, and in 1908 purchased the Hampton hotel, which since has been known as the Rice hotel. He was a man of strong convictions and was diligent in the affairs of his own business, and never interfered with the rights or privileges of others.

He is survived by his wife and seven children as follows: Mrs. W. D. Fletcher and Mrs. Willie King of Terrell, Texas; Mrs. W. F. Sewell, Pauls Valley; Mrs. Montie Beach, Houston Texas; Charles Rice, Dallas Texas; F. R. Rice, Aberdeen, South Dakota; and Earl Rice of Seminole. he also leaves seven grandchildren; one brother, D. R. Rice of Marietta, and one sister, Mrs. B. Barrett of Joshua, Texas.

Special music at the funeral services was furnished by the male quartet composed of R. W. Driskill, A. P. Burns, J. G. Alexander, and J. L. Medlock. The pall bearers were Judge C. A. Thomason, Judge J. S. Garrison, Sam Kendall, T. M. Tethers, R. W. Driskill, and A. P. Burns. Stufflebean-Meyer, undertakers, directed the funeral services. Burial was made in Mt. Olivet cemetery.

Out of town visitors to the services were Mr. and Mrs. W. I. Smith, Mrs. J. E. Galt, Mrs. Kate Galt James, Mrs. Geo. Pettitt, Mrs. Marie Whittington, Miss Mittie Reid, Miss Emily Scott, Miss Frances Terrell, Miss Thomas, and Billy Doak Galt, all of Ardmore; Ed Cheney of Fort Worth, Texas; Sam Muse of Elmore City; Mr. and Mrs. P. A. Little of Chickasha and B. F. Sewell.
