Born on 16 JAN 1876 in Hickory Flat, Cherokee, Georgia. (Source: 1880 US Federal census, and family passdown) NOTE: Suspect he is a twin to a daughter born in 1876 to AA and SJ Martin, and buried at Hickory Flat.

He is found in two 1900 censuses, in both New Orleans, Louisiana and Cherokee County, Georgia. (Source: US Federal Censuses) I suspect he actually lived in New Orleans. The 1900 census shows he is a Money Broker, which corresponds to the 22 MAR 1901 'Cherokee Advance' news article which shows he worked at a Loan Agency.

He was arrested for Simple Larceny, 16 APR 1901 'The State v John Martin' was dismissed (No bill). (Source: Cherokee County, Georgia Superior Court Minutes, Book 12, 1898-1903)

He married Valerie Vitter on 10 SEP 1903 in New Orleans, Orleans, Louisiana. (Source: Louisiana Vital Records; Volume: 25; Page: 192.)

Letter to Anderson Alfred Martin about 1903 stated his address was 1061 Magazine Street, New Orleans, Orleans, Louisiana.

On 01 JUL 1905, his son with Valerie, Earl Leland Martin died. (Source: Orleans Death Indices 1894-1907; Volume: 135; Page: 797)

Family letters gathered from Connie James Mashburn; Jesse Darwin Martin; and Sharon Lynn Martin Mattingly provide addresses and timelines for John and Valerie's life in New Orleans, but the latest known letter is dated 09 MAY 1907, and is an envelope mailed from John A. Martin to his father Anderson. All letters and envelopes are scanned and uploaded to Ancestry.com.

Valerie filed for divorce about 12 MAY 1911 citing adultery as cause. (Source: Divorce and Annulments, Index to Vol. 18 Dockets; 1910-1911; New Orleans, Louisiana; Divorce #97045.)

The court approved the divorce on 14 JUN 1911 ruling in Valerie's favor. (Source: New Orleans Public Library, Divorce Records, Civil District Court, Orleans Parish, Docket #97045)

A couple of cases in New Orleans were found where a John Martin was hospitalized for insanity. My current working theory is that he was possibly institutionalized. Need to seek records in New Orleans to corroborate this theory.

One of the two cases dates to FEB 1912 which would fit, but the age of the individual appears to be to old.
