Lorraine Sommerfeld, 88, Bismarck, passed away Sunday, July 31, 2011 at St. Alexius Hospital, Bismarck. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM, Wednesday August 3, 2011, at Trinity Lutheran Church with Rev. Steve Sathre officiating. Burial will be in the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan. Visitation is scheduled for one hour prior to the service at the church.

Lorraine was born July 28, 1923, in Coleharbor, ND to Chester and Julianna (Wohl) Nelson. The family moved several times due to Chester's job. Lorraine graduated from Cathay High School, Cathay, ND and completed her degree at the North Dakota State College of Science, Wahpeton, ND. She worked at Lloyd's of London, Minneapolis, MN prior to enlisting in the Navy in 1943. After she was discharged from the service, Lorraine worked at Sears, Huron, SD as a manager/buyer and later as a cashier at the First National Bank of Eden, SD. Lorraine met Fred Sommerfeld and they married December 20, 1954. She was a homemaker and mother to two daughters while pursuing her interest in writing. Lorraine wrote the musical pageant for Fessenden's Diamond Jubilee in 1968. Another play was broadcasted on the local radio station. Lorraine's passion of literature, writing and the theatre lead her to pursue a Bachelor's Degree in English, Speech and Drama at Valley City State University. She received several acting awards for her numerous roles in college productions. Upon graduation in 1973, she taught at Ada High School, Ada, MN and also at Riverdale, ND. She moved to Bismarck in 1980, where she taught at Century High School until her retirement in 1986. Lorraine wrote several articles and was published regularly in the Prairie Business Magazine and the North Dakota Horizons Magazine. She loved the humor and mystery genres and was working on several story ideas at the time of her death. She's been a storyteller and purveyor of wit and humor all her life.

Lorraine is survived by her husband, Fred, Bismarck; two daughters, Nancy D'Ambrosio, Bismarck, and Susan Sommerfeld, O'Fallon, MO; one brother, James (Ruby) Nelson, Enderlin, ND; sister-in-law, Bertha Ernst, Bismarck; grandchildren, Anthony and Christopher D'Ambrosio, Ryan (Amy) Nelson, Kristen (Jason) Marty, and Stephanie Nelson; and one niece and two nephews.

Lorraine was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Lavonne and brother, Raymond.
