Pauline Reid Schaal was born on Aug. 22, 1909, in Dittie, Russia, to Christian parents Elizabeth and John Reid. Soon after her father's death, Pauline and four more of the other children migrated with their mother to the United States in 1913 and located at Windsor.

Pauline became a citizen in 1917 through her stepfather. Pauline was baptized as an infant into the Christian faith. She was confirmed at the age of 14 years by Rev. Paul Yuelling. She became a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Windsor. She was very faithful to her church.

On Nov. 12, 1928, she was united in marriage to Gottlob E. Schaal of Burlington by Pastor Paul Yuelling of Windsor. They made their home on the farm northwest of Burlington until 1952. The family moved to Burlington in 1956. There they built their new home.

In November, 1990, Pauline moved to the Burlington Rest Home and lived there until three months ago, when she was hospitalized until her death Oct 27, 1994.

Pauline became a member of the Hope Congregational Church where she remained a very faithful member. She was a member of Ladies Mission and Aid Society of her church. She was a member of the Hospital Auxiliary as a volunteer worker. She loved to work in her garden and especially with flowers.

To this union four children were born -- Daniel Richard who died in infancy; Clarence Victor, who at the age of 31 years died in an airplane tragedy; and two daughters Virginia and Ann. Pauline was also blessed with 11 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild; 6 half Sisters, and many other relatives and friends. Pauline was a good Christian mother and loved her family and home. Pauline was a loving wife, mother and grandmother and great-great grandmother. She was always ready to help where she was needed. The ways of the Lord were wonderful, even in the dark days, but the Word of God was her comfort. She was very concerned with the future of her family.

Pauline, with her two daughters by her side, passed away at the age of 85 years, surviving her are her two daughters, Virginia M. Weiss of Bethune, and Ann M. Chalfant of Scottsdale, Ariz.
