Dr. Knauf had practiced medicine, specializing in surgery, in Chilton since 1907. He was born Oct. 18, 1883, in Sheboygan, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Nicholas Knauf Sr. and attended St. Mary’s Catholic School in Chilton.
He attended Canisius College, High School in Buffalo, N.Y. and was graduated from Marquette University Medical School in 1904. After graduation he interned at Superior and returned to Milwaukee for a brief time before beginning a practice at Forest Junction.
He then practiced at Chilton for a brief time before going to Europe to study further in the field of surgery at Vienna and the University of Bonn. He returned to Chilton in 1907 and practiced medicine here until his illness about six months ago.
The 77-year old physician formerly was chief of staff at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Appleton and the first chief of staff at Calumet Memorial Hospital in Chilton.
Dr. Knauf was a member of the Calumet County, Wisconsin, and American Medical Associations. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus.
His marriage to Miss Arnesta Donhard took place July 19, 1910 at St. John’s Catholic Church in Marshfield. His wife survives.
Other survivors are six sons, Dr. James and Dr. Robert Knauf of Chilton, Dr. John of Stockbridge, Dr. Charles of Appleton, Atty. Richard Knauf of Forest Junction and Nicholas of Neenah; two brothers, William N. of Chilton and Dr. A. R. Knauf of Tampa, Fla.; two sisters, Mrs. Frank Krekel and Mrs. Lewis Keller, both of Dowagiac, Minn, and 18 grandchildren.
He was an uncle of Dr. F. A. Knauf, a Sheboygan dentist. He was preceded in death by one son.
