MARTY FAMILY SETTLED IN MONTICELLO IN 1849
Today is the seventieth anniversary of the arrival in Green county of Monticello's pioneer residents. Mrs. Johannes Marty, a communication from J. U. Elmer, a son-in-law of Mrs. Marty, states. Of the seventeen settlers who came to Monticello from Switzerland in the years at that time only four are left, Mr. Elmer writes. They are Mrs. John Jenny and Anton Baumgartner of Monroe and John and J. U. Elmer of Sylvester. Mr. Elmer's little historical sketch regarding the coming of the family follows:
"Seventy years ago, on the 29th of June 1849, there was joy and gladness in the village of Monticello when Mrs. Johannes Marty, then a widow of 65, arrived from Switzerland with her youngest daughter, Verena (Mrs. J. U. Elmer) and family to meet her two sons Mathias and Jacob Marty and her oldest daughter Magdalena, (Mrs. Anton Baumgartner) and family with the intention to make her home with them continually.
"Mothers with comfortable homes equipped with everything necessary and with the convenient traveling facilities of the present, can't understand the experience of a woman of that age who took such a trip in those days. It was a task requiring great courage, pluck and energy considering the primitive mode of travel and the trials and hardships awaiting them who came to build up a home in a new country which offered many obstacles to the way of success.
"Jacob Marty came to this country in the year 1847 as a trained miller with the intention to serve this country in that capacity. He afterwards selected Miss Electa Hill of Sylvester as his life companion."
"Mathias Marty came to this country in the year 1848. He was educated in the best schools of Switzerland for a business career and married Miss Amanda Pierce of Washington township. Anton Baumgartner came here as a well trained practical locksmith. But my father and others who saw the opportunity to buy good land at $1.25 an acre then turned their attention to farming and continued until old age or other pursuits took them away from it."
"Of the seventeen who came those two years from Switzerland to this country only four are left. They are Ursula (Mrs. John Jenny) and her brother Anton Baumgartner of Monroe and John and J. U. Elmer of Sylvester and they are gradually nearing the age of four score.
Anton & Magdalena (Marti) Baumgartner were married 14 Jun 1833 in Canton Glarus, Switzerland.
