Professional baseball player in the Negro Leagues. Fields was a pitcher and third-baseman for the Washington DC Homestead Grays of the Negro Leagues from 1939 to 1950. He won 13 games for the Homestead Grays in 1941 and 15 games in 1942. His 11 year career with the Grays was interrupted by service in the U.S. Army during WWII. Fields also won the batting title in 1951 to 1952 in the Venezuelan league. He was also MVP eight times in various leagues during his career. Later he was an alchohol counselor in the District of Columbia. Fields became president of the Negro League Baseball Players Association in the 1990s. "My Life in the Negro Leagues," an autobiography of his baseball career, was published in 1992. Cause of death: heart ailment.
