Irwin Roy Grimes was born on Thursday, May 22, 1919 to Irl R. and Edna (Matthews) Grimes in York Township, Day County, South Dakota near Lily. He attended country school District 135. The family moved back to a farm near Roslyn where he also attended country school. The family moved back to Lily area and he graduated from Lily High School in 1938. After graduation he entered the Civilian Conservation World War 11, stationed in the Philippians. After his discharge, he returned to Lily and went into the cattle trucking business.
On June 28, 1950 he married Marlene Herr at Watertown, South Dakota. The couple made their home in Lily and he was the manager of the Peavey Elevator, In 1968 he bought the Lily Drug Store which his parents owned and operated since they purchased it from Hubert Humphrey, Sr. In 1972 he bought the elevator and named the business Lily Grain company. He operated it until 1981 when he sold it and retired. After his retirement he drove school bus for the Bristol School System.
He was Mayor of Lily and was a charter member of Engebretson-Lien Post 156 American Legion of which he was a past commander and was finance officer for many years. After his retirement he enjoyed traveling, bowling and has done much work in town of Lily.
Roy passed away on Sunday August 4, 1996 at Groton, South Dakota at the age of 77 years, 2 months and 13 days.
Survivors include four sons, Irlyn Grimes of Spokane Washington, Austin (Marion) Grimes and Terry Grimes of Webster South Dakota and Randy (Dawna) Grimes of Watertown South Dakota; four daughters, Mrs. (Steve) Marla Williamson of Webster, Mrs. Lonnie (Carla) Gross of Gillette Wy., Mrs. (Scott) Lori Cunningham of Aberdeen South Dakota and Mrs. (Clyde) Lisa Hirsch of Piedmont, South Dakota; two brothers, Bill Grimes of St. Paul Mn. and Wayne Grimes of Orland Fl., three sisters Mrs. Mary Towles of Austin Mn., Mrs. (Joe) Irlene Schiley of Lily and Mrs. (Clifford) Lois Lee of Sturtevant, WI; 16 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren; and a special friend Velma Hollingsworth of Aberdeen SD. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Austin, and two sisters, Marguerite Davis and Imelda Krome.
