Martha Shults Armstrong was Married to Pleasant Armstrong until he died in the Civil War. They had one child,

She married his brother Willam "Duff" Armsthrong after he returned from the war. Duff was discharged early due to illness after his mother Hannah Armstrong appealed in person to her old friend Abraham Lincoln. Duff Armstrong may have been the only soldier discharged on a hand written order from the President of the United States.

Martha Shults Armstrong died in Mason County Illinois and is probably buried in Walkers Grove Cemetery with her husband and children. There are many missing headstones in Walker's Grove.
