Holy Roman Emperor, Roman Catholic Saint. The son of Henry 'the Quarrelsome', Duke of Bavaria. his grandfather was the brother of Emperor Otto I the Great. Due to a order of Emperor Otto II he was raised in the cloister school of Hildesheim and was supposed to gain a high religious post to exclude him from succession. In 995 he succeeded his father as Heinrich IV Duke of Bavaria. While his father had fought against the Emperor, he fought for the Emperor. Around 1000 he married Kunigunde of Luxembourg. On July 7, 1002 he succeeded Emperor Otto III as German King. In 1004 during his first Italian campaign he was crowned King of Italy. In 1007 he founded the bishopric of Bamberg. During a second Italian campaign Pope Benedict VIII crowned him Emperor on February 14, 1014. He was very religious, founded several churches and cloisters that followed the reforms from Cluny. He waged three wars against the Poles and their King Boleslaw Chrobry to stenghten the borders. During his third campaign in Italy he summoned a Synod in which he intensify the celibacy. The legend say he had taken a mutual vow of chastity with his wife which was the reason why they had no children. An sickness of the Emperor might have been the real reason. He was canonized in 1146 by Pope Eugenius III. His Feast day is July 13 but is not celebrated. He is the patron Saint of Basel and Bamberg. He is attributes are the Emperors crown the model of a church and a lily. His grave is a work of Tilman Riemenschneider from 1513.
