Joe J. Slechta, Jr., 80 years of age, passed away Saturday November 12, 2011 at Hillcrest Hospital in Mayfield Hts., Ohio. Born on September 10, 1931 in Cleveland, Ohio, he was the son of the late Joe J. and Bernice M. (Fisher) Slechta, Sr. A longtime Aurora area resident, he was a member of the Aurora Mennonite Church. Joe was employed as a tool and die maker for 37 years at Chrysler Motor Company Twinsburg Stamping Plant retiring in 2000. Joe also served under Portage County Sheriff Rose Dustman as a deputy and was a member of Dustman's Deputies. A.U.S. Army Veteran, he served his country during the Korean Conflict, and was a lifetime member of the Aurora V.F.W. He also held memberships in UAW Local 6204 and the DTJ in Auburn Township. Joe loved cutting his grass on his little red tractor, taking rides to enjoy the scenery and his daily morning visits to Bob Evans restaurant. On May 28, 1994, he married Stella A. (Laiza) Slechta who survives at their home. Also surviving are his children Joe A.Slechta of Twinsburg, Ronald(Penny) Slechta of Bainbridge, Kenny (Elaine) Elechta of Nelson Twp., David (Maxine) Slechta of Aurora, Jimmy (Beth) Slechta of Mantua, Tom (Lisa) Slechta of Diamond, Mary Horne of Aurora, Archie (Karen) Kowalewski of Aurora and Eric (Sue Oldenburg) Kowalewski of Solon, his siblings Jim (Jo Blazer) Slechta of Hudson and Janice (Jim) McNally of Arizona, his step-mother Margaret Slechta of Stow and 13 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife Mary A. Slechta in 1972 and his son Michael Slechta. Calling hours will be Tuesday 2:00 P.M.-4:00 P.M. & 6:00 P.M.-8:00 P.M. at the Green Family Funeral Home & Crematory Service in Mantua. Funeral services will be Wednesday November 16, 2011 11:00 A.M. at the Aurora Mennonite Church, 59 East Mennonite Road, Aurora with Pastor Tim Schultz officiating. Joe will then be laid to rest at the Aurora Mennonite Cemetery where he will receive full military honors.
