Major League Baseball Player, Manager. The brother of Major League Player Anton 'Mutz' Ens, he was an infielder for 15 years. He played mostly in the minor leagues, appearing in parts of 4 season in the Majors from 1922 to 1925, playing in 67 games, and batting a respectable .290. After his playing days were over he turned to coaching where he became a protege of Donie Bush. On August 28, 1929, Donie Bush resigned as Pirates manager and Ens was named by Pirates owner Barney Dreyfuss to replace him. He led the 'Buckos' to a 21-14 record that season, good enough to stay in 2nd place. After back to back 5th place finishes in 1930 and 1931 he was replaced by George Gibson for the 1932 season. In 1932 he coached for the Detroit Tigers, in 1933 the Cincinnati Reds and 1934 the Boston Braves. He returned to Pittsburgh to coach for his old teammate, Pie Traynor, in 1935. Ens managed Indianapolis of the American Association in 1940, then made a return to the Reds for a one year stint as coach in 1941. In 1942, he became Manager of the Syracuse Chiefs of the International League, a position he held until his death from pneumonia in 1950. Over the course of his career, Jewel Ens accrued a lifetime .290 Batting Average with 1 Home Run and 24 RBI's. He had a lifetime 176-167 record as Major League Manager.
