David, as a child, was wealthy, but as early as 1746, he lost his wealth. One possibility is that he freed his slaves and thus had no means of income. He is listed as an adult for the first time about 1735, so it is assumed that he began his family soon after. Amelia County, Virginia, records show a history of frequent court cases, his grandsons begin appearing in the records in 1769 or earlier, so his sons started their families between 1760 and 1789 when Zachariah married "Kathy Alvis Patterson".
