At age nine he was orphaned and at age 16 he shipped out for America. He moved in with a brother in Chambersburg, PA.
In 1866 he moved to Chillicothe and worked at several jobs before opening a shoe store.
On July 30, 1870 he married Magdalene 'Lena' Burgy in Chillicothe. They had eleven children: Emma, Joseph, Mrs Guy Williams, Albert, Will, Frank, Walter, Mabel, Hazel, Caroline, and Harry.
